Abstract

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to comprehend and manage your emotions, as well as people around you. It can highly impact our personal, social and work life; hence, it is important to understand exactly what it is and how it plays a vital role in our lives. In recent years, emotional intelligence has emerged as one of the most significant dimensions of human development, influencing personal growth, social relationships, academic success and professional achievements. Under traditional notions of intelligence that emphasize cognitive abilities and Intelligence Quotient (IQ), emotional intelligence highlights the importance of emotional awareness, empathy, communication and interpersonal understanding in shaping human behaviour and decision-making. This paper focuses on the emerging understanding of emotional intelligence in present times and the importance of its key factors that facilitate building good personal as well as interpersonal skills. The study further attempts to present a general understanding of emotional intelligence as an evolving concept that goes beyond cognitive intelligence and offers a broader prospective on human capability. In addition, the paper explores how emotional intelligence contributes to personality development and helps individuals to become more confident, self-motivated and emotionally stable. It underlines the importance of cultivating EI from an early stage through proper guidance, emotional support, and positive social interaction. The study concludes that EI is not merely an inborn trait but a learnable skill that can positively transform individual and society as a whole. It surpasses cognitive intelligence giving a different measure of human intelligence.
